The Platform

Because two minds are always better than one and because we believe that great ideas can come from anyone, anywhere, LGI developed an online Open Innovation Platform, an off-the-shelf system easily customised to your needs.

Open innovation?

Open innovation originated as “the use of purposive inflows and outflows of knowledge to accelerate internal innovation, and expand the markets for external use of innovation, respectively,” as described by Henry Chesbrough, a Berkeley professor who initiated the concept back in the 1960s.

To put it in simple terms, open innovation means that you involve internal as well as external partners to jointly build better ideas and better products. Open innovation is wide-spread collaboration that reaches beyond your usual work environment.

The concept has been massively taken up by corporate R&D in recent years, which now add to traditional practices (collaborative frameworks, tech clusters), new, open forms of collaboration such as seeker-solver marketplaces, challenge-base crowdsourcing, early customer involvement, crowdfunding, collaborative design and so on.

Seekers share needs and solvers propose expertise. They then build the concept together, and find the missing partners.

But our platform is much more than a simple seeker-solver marketplace: it comes with a built-in phase-gate model where an idea develops in phases and passes several validation gates, towards the final objective, often the realisation of a project or the launch of a new product on the market.

The platform is built as a social network with a purpose, meaning that it focuses on people in its member organisations, who will share, discuss, build, evaluate and promote ideas, solve issues while keeping strategic alignment. It engages your people, and strongly contributes to building an open, evolving community around your initiative.

This approach allows focusing effort and funding on the most promising ideas and turning them into real projects or products with the best opportunity and feasibility.

Is this for me?

LGI’s Open Innovation Platform can typically be deployed in five modes:

  1. Internally, within any organisation developing innovative products or services, whatever its size: the platform can be customised to support internal collaboration by granting roles to R&D, Marketing, Finance, General Management and any other department involved in the innovation process
  2. With your preferred partners, by opening the platform to a number of selected contractors and business partners
  3. Within a higher-education institution, to foster cross-sectorial innovation or embark students in collaborative challenges
  4. Within a collaboration network, typically a technology cluster or professional association, allowing to foster joint work with a dedicated, members-only web platform
  5. In a fully open mode, by allowing anyone to access, and possibly to participate, in the collaboration process; this mode requires cautious management, but may prove useful as support to a viral marketing strategy

Adopt the Open Innovation Platform if you’re looking for:

  • Efficiency: open a “one-stop shop” for idea and product co-development, with an unlimited number of idea threads
  • Alignment: use phase-gate controls to ensure that emerging projects, products and services match with strategy; and a ‘recycle bin’ can be implemented for other ideas later on
  • Transparency: grant visibility on emerging ideas, to support real-time collaboration between departments or with external partners
  • Inclusivity: ensure that all wanted partners can suggest ideas, express interest or offer competences
  • State-of-the-art: deploy a top-notch collaborative tool based on the latest open innovation practices & social media approach
