The European Commission has released the evaluation of the first 3 years of Horizon 2020 (H2020), the Research and Innovation programme of the EU (2014-2020), which aims at stimulating excellent science, building industrial leadership, and providing solutions to the challenges that our society faces.

In the first 3 years of implementation, a total of 115 235 eligible proposals were submitted under H2020 calls, with a total requested EC contribution of € 182.4 billion.

More than 54% of H2020 participants are newcomers (they had not participated in the previous programme FP7), and almost half of these new participants are SMEs.

Participants mainly come from secondary and higher education establishments (38.4%), followed by private for-profit companies (36.1%), while research organisations submit 18.2% of applications.

However, the overall success rate of eligible full proposals is 12.6% – in other words, one out of eight eligible proposals received funding, which is well below the overall 18.4% success rate of FP7.

The average success rate of applications in the SME instrument (Phases 1 and 2) is even lower at 7.5%.

With a funding rate up to 100% for research and innovation projects, this funding scheme is very attractive making it increasingly popular and attractive for organisations in Europe, and as a result has become very competitive.
